Trenitalia, founded on 1st June 2000 by Ferrovie dello Stato Spa (ferroviedellostato.it), belongs to a drastic business reorganization process started in 1998 and aimed at meeting the requirements of the EU directives on market liberalization issues: in this respect train service providers and infrastructure managers had to become two different bodies.

Trenitalia, a train company with operation and administration autonomy, aims at transporting passengers over medium and long distances at local and regional level as well as carrying goods. This company consists of three main departments: Passeggeri [passengers], Trasporto Regionale [regional transport], Cargo, - respectively devoted to transporting passengers over medium and long distances, regional transport, and carrying goods – and Unità Tecnologie e Materiale Rotabile [Technology and rolling stock department] involved in purchasing, designing, restructuring and servicing railway vehicles.

Trenitalia views service safety, quality, and sound customer relationships as the foundations of its company mission. Trenitalia, has approximately 61,000 employees, owns economic and instrumental resources and embodies the first important goal achieved by the Italian train industry reorganization process and future development.
